United States & Canada

Continental expansion of the Inland Northwest wire map: power-line crossings over lakes (≥ 5 ha) and rivers across the entire US and Canada, computed from public utility and government GIS and cross-checked against the FAA obstacle file. The Inland NW keeps its own higher-resolution map and pack built on USGS hydrography; this continental tier uses OpenStreetMap hydrography and skips minor streams.

Why this exists

Most wires that kill pilots are not on any chart. Under 14 CFR §77.9, a wire below 200 ft AGL away from an airport requires no notice to the FAA — so it never enters the FAA obstacle file, never reaches sectional charts, and never triggers an EFB obstacle alert. Even charted wires are stored as single points (the catenary tower), not as the span a floatplane actually hits. Of the 109,174 wire-over-water crossings this project has computed across the US and Canada, 98.9% of the US ones appear nowhere in the FAA obstacle file.

On June 24, 2026, a floatplane bound for the Priest Lake splash-in struck a transmission line crossing the Columbia River near Kennewick, WA — two fatalities. That line, like most river crossings, was not in the obstacle file. Earlier accidents at Desert Aire, WA (1998) and the Fraser River, BC (2020) followed the same pattern. This map and the packs below exist so that seaplane and low-level pilots can brief wire crossings the charts don't show.

What mapping can and cannot fix. We classified all 532 fatal wire strikes in the US (430, NTSB) and Canada (102, TSB) by operational scenario. Roughly three-quarters happened in scenarios where a briefed wire could plausibly have changed the outcome: en-route low flight, takeoff and approach legs (including backcountry and off-airport), aerial application, professional low-level work, and water operations — the exact surfaces this project maps. The remainder — wires struck during forced landings already in progress (11% in both countries, independently) and intentional low passes — no map fixes, and the accident pins for those cases say so honestly.

The data is advisory only and known incomplete — low distribution lines (the most dangerous kind) are proprietary in most jurisdictions and severely under-mapped everywhere. A clear map is never evidence that a passage is wire-free. Fly the survey pass.

Seen a wire this map doesn't show? Report it

Of the 1,475 NTSB wire-strike accident sites we analyzed, roughly 600 have no wire in any public dataset — farm lines, service drops, cables strung across a slough. No utility file, no chart, and no map (including this one) knows they exist. Pilot reports are the only way that class ever gets charted.

Email a wire report ([email protected], subject "WIRE REPORT") with: where — coordinates if you can, otherwise the water or strip name and a description; estimated height above the water or ground; when you saw it; and a photo if you got one safely. Reports are verified against aerial imagery and LiDAR before anything ships; verified wires appear as PILOT pins on this map and in the packs. Your report may be the only record of that wire anywhere.

Fourth of the four DG-hosting services and, like ct-eversource, absent from the research record. NOT a southern-New-England source: it belongs to the nhvt flagship (Winnipesaukee/Squam and the Connecticut River above the MA line), so the Wave-5 pass ingested it at NATIONAL tier only; the compute_crossings_nhvt.py region wiring landed in Wave-7 (2026-08-01, task w7-eversource-ctnh) — 379,461 of the 390,774 sections fall inside the nh-vt-lakes envelope, and they are the FIRST utility-authored conductor geometry the project holds for the New Hampshire side of that region. Same posture and harvest as its siblings: no OH/UG attribute, klass minor_line, candidate-excluded, tier D alone, in MIXED_POSTURE; adaptive OBJECTID-range windows; voltage normalised to float kV at fetch; outSR=4326 mandatory, NOAA ENC charted overhead cables (with clearances), RIGIS above-ground transmission, Rhode Island Energy (ex-Narragansett Electric / National Grid RI) OVERHEAD distribution network — 676 per-feeder MULTIPART polylines holding 36,802 overhead path segments statewide, from RISDP/RIElecDistFdrsPhases layers 1 (three-phase, 349) and 4 (single-phase, 327). The research record mentions the RISDP folder only in passing ('if wanted'); it has the identical structure to MASDP, so Rhode Island's incumbent utility comes in on exactly the same terms as ma-natgrid: Construction='OH' on every row, the UG twins (layers 2 and 5) never fetched, OVERHEAD-PROVEN. This is the first utility-authored conductor geometry the project holds for Rhode Island — the narragansett-ri flagship region previously had HIFLD + OSM + the RIGIS transmission digitisation (ri-gis) only, and ri-gis is attribute-sparse, so this is also the first RI source carrying a voltage. Method & sources

Open data: the raw datasets (crossings, spans, the NTSB+TSB wire-strike record, MET towers, cableways, ag section briefs) are downloadable as gzipped GeoJSON with an attribution README at mrb.sh/wires-tiles/open-data/.

Crossings are geometric intersections of power-line vectors with water (OpenStreetMap water polygons ≥ 5 ha and river centerlines); duplicates across sources are merged (60 m, then a voltage-keyed 120 m pass) and cross-checked against the FAA Daily Digital Obstacle File (August 6, 2026), filtered to wires over water. Confidence: A = 2+ independent sources, B = single government source, C = single OSM transmission line. The "Coverage" column above shows which kinds of sources fire in each region — "OSM only" and "HIFLD + OSM" regions have no state/provincial government layer yet and are the least complete. Lidar validation. Every US "possible crossing" (a mapped line whose geometry stops at the water's edge) is checked against aerial lidar — USGS 3DEP in the US, NRCan CanElevation point clouds in Canada: we pull the point cloud over the adjacent open water and look for elevated, linearly-arranged returns — the signature of a conductor hanging over the surface. A hit upgrades the pin to lidar-verified (dark red, and an amber WIRE placemark in the pack); a clean sweep is only a reduced-concern note, never a green light — thin or low wires evade lidar, and many rural areas have sparse or no coverage (3051 confirmed / 7685 clear / 1974 bridge-or-structure / 14394 insufficient lidar of 27,104 checked so far; Canada has no equivalent open point-cloud service yet).

Non-powerline cables. Two hazard classes no utility dataset will ever contain: cable ferries (a ferry cable stretched across a river or narrows at or just above the water surface — from the government operator inventories of BC, AB, SK, ON, QC, the Maritimes and US state/county ferries) and aerial cableways over water (gondolas, cable cars, zip lines and industrial conveyors that span water — swept from OpenStreetMap). Both render as blue pins. A cable ferry crossing is lethal to a seaplane on the landing or takeoff run; treat the whole reach around the ferry line as unusable.

THIS IS NOT THE LAYER THE RESEARCH RECORD POINTED AT, deliberately. The record names Nodal_Hosting_Capacity_MA/2 (143,066 conductor segments) and notes the OH/UG flag is absent there; the ny-nimo workaround of joining a sibling OH/UG feeder list DOES NOT TRANSFER, because measured here 955 of the 961 OH feeders also appear in the UG list (a feeder has both kinds of section), so a feeder-level join would classify essentially nothing and the nodal layer can only be ingested as underground-contaminated. The service publishes each circuit DISSOLVED into one multi-part feature (circuit 5R52 alone is 2,094 vertices over 136.6 miles), so the fetch explodes every feature into its constituent parts — a mean of 2.8 vertices per part, i.e. the parts are span-level segments and the 'feature' is only the circuit they belong to. Unexploded, the 60 m dedupe would collapse every crossing on a 136-mile circuit into one and report a lake span as a 136-mile wire. No voltage field exists. klass minor_line: tier D on its own, candidate-excluded. New Hampshire Electric Co-op ROW/span survey — 25,132 pole-to-pole spans across all six NHEC districts (Alton 5,596, Andover 1,932, Colebrook 1,768, Conway 2,168, Plymouth 8,679, Raymond 2,665) plus the SP13 Sunapee feeder 2,324. NHEC is the utility that actually serves the Lakes Region and North Country shorelines, so this is float-plane country at span resolution: each feature is a 2-vertex segment 50–350 ft long whose endpoints coincide with poles in the service's companion pole layers (verified to 7 decimal places — Alton span endpoint -71.19716/43.44699 matches pole 313/32 exactly). MIXED POSTURE: there is no OH/UG attribute, and the overhead argument here is about the SURVEY (spans between mapped poles, selected for vegetation/ROW work) rather than a per-segment construction flag, so it takes the unflagged-source treatment — klass minor_line, tier D alone, candidate-excluded. SCOPE CAVEAT, and it can never be read as coverage: this is the 2025 work plan, ~730 line-miles of NHEC's ~5,600. Where a span is, there is conductor; where there is none, that means nothing. Clallam County PUD No. 1 primary distribution, north Olympic Peninsula — 6,068 OVERHEAD sections of 7,941, per-span 2–3 vertex geometry with feeder, substation and voltage. The PUD that serves Neah Bay, Sekiu, Clallam Bay, Forks, Lake Crescent, the Sol Duc and Hoh valleys, Dungeness and Sequim Bay; it pairs with wa-jeffersoncou to give the Olympic Peninsula both of its utilities for the first time. Coverage is system-wide rather than one feeder — 21 distinct substations, essentially every one Clallam PUD operates. OVERHEAD-PROVEN per section, and the obvious reading of the source is wrong: `Constructn`='UGP' (1,873 sections) is the only underground class and is filtered SERVER-SIDE at fetch; the 12DCL/14DCL classes LOOK underground because their conductor codes start 'DC', but every conductor code in this table does (DCACSR4/0 is bare ACSR on poles) — the real URD cables are the DCUCA/DCUPCA/DCCIC codes and they sit on the UGP rows. Verified before the filter was written, not assumed. `OperVolt` is 7.2/14.4 kV = primary distribution only, no transmission and no secondary, hence klass minor_line. Lewis County PUD No. 1 trimmed-overstory spans — 4,106 per-span 2-vertex polylines scattered across 26–27 substation areas from Pe Ell and Boistfort east to White Pass, i.e. the Riffe / Mayfield / Merwin / Swift reservoir country and the Cowlitz drainage. Real conductor, not a schematic: `gs_old_layer_name` reads DBO.PrimaryConductor on every populated row, and rows carry conductor spec (2ACSR, 336ACSR), substation and feeder id straight out of the PUD's Milsoft/WindMil span table. MIXED POSTURE by the standing rule — there is no OH/UG attribute — though the physical argument for overhead is unusually strong here: the selection criterion is overstory vegetation trimming, which by definition only touches overhead spans, and `gs_subtype_cd` is uniformly 1 with bare-ACSR conductor codes throughout. klass minor_line, tier D alone, candidate-excluded. NorthWestern Energy's WHOLE transmission system — 430 named circuits at 34.5/50/69/100/115/161/230/500 kV across Montana AND South Dakota on one layer. Not a slice: summed conductor length is 43,281,579 ft = 8,197 miles, matching NorthWestern's published transmission mileage, and 422 distinct circuit names across 430 features means roughly one feature per named circuit, each following its own conductor (the largest, 500 kV circuit 0265C, is a single 554-vertex path out of Billings). 336 circuits fall inside Montana, where they are the first utility-authored transmission this project has had over the densest float water in the Inland-Northwest pack — Flathead, the Swan–Seeley chain, Whitefish, Noxon/Cabinet Gorge, the Clark Fork and the Bitterroot. TRANSMISSION GRADE, so unlike the other Wave-8 smalls it is klass 'line' and candidate-ELIGIBLE (the ok-oge treatment). There is no OH/UG attribute and none is needed: underground transmission at 34.5–500 kV is essentially nonexistent outside city cores. ONE SOURCE ID FOR BOTH STATES — the 86 South Dakota circuits are marked only by a '-SD' suffix on the circuit name and ride under a `territory` field; giving them their own id would let NorthWestern corroborate itself into a fabricated tier A wherever a Montana circuit runs east. Snohomish County PUD medium-voltage CORRIDOR AXES — 604 medial-axis polylines (3,092 km) reduced by pipeline/extract_snopud_centerlines.py from 382 dissolved ±50 ft buffer polygons, covering Everett, Marysville, Arlington, Lake Stevens, Monroe, Sultan, Granite Falls and Darrington. CORRIDOR TRACE, the on-ccim-* class, and the posture matters more than the geometry: THIS SOURCE DOES NOT LOCATE A WIRE. SnoPUD publishes its MV network only as this buffer — the underlying line layer MV_HOST_CAP_ALL_V2 is not public — so the axis is somewhere within the ribbon half-width of a conductor, and the ribbon covers the whole medium-voltage system with UNDERGROUND primary mixed in and indistinguishable. It is strictly weaker than the OEB CCIM corridors, which at least carry an overhead flag. Carried because ~5,400 implied route-miles is honest evidence that medium-voltage distribution runs those routes in a busy float region, and because it feeds the web map and the lidar queue: klass minor_line, tier D alone, pack-excluded, candidate-excluded, never corroborates another source into tier A (is_corridor_trace). The ribbon width was measured, not assumed — area/(perimeter/2) over all 382 features is a tight unimodal 30–33 m, consistent with the stated ±50 ft buffer and far inside the 50 m acceptance bar; 550 of 1,193 exploded parts still failed a per-part width test and were dropped rather than traced. Xcel Energy NSP-Minnesota hosting-capacity GRID TRACE — 35,126 route lines (13,642 km) chained from 150,575 OVERHEAD presentation cells (of 226,756; the 76,181 underground are excluded server-side by OH_UG and never downloaded). NOT A CONDUCTOR LAYER: Xcel publishes Minnesota's hosting capacity as 'blurred' boxes, and the wire is somewhere inside its box — measured median footprint 141.6 x 133.4 m at lat 45.04, so positional error is 97.3 m worst case / 56.2 m RMS, the COARSEST of the three grid traces (SDG&E 42.5/24.6, Ameren 26.9/15.5) and WIDER than the 60 m dedupe radius. Positional-trace posture, enforced not asserted: klass minor_line, tier D on its own, candidate-excluded, and named in POSITIONAL_TRACE so it can never corroborate another source into tier A. AND IT IS NOT A LATTICE, unlike the other two — on circuit WAS092, 3,589 cells carry 2,898 distinct longitudes and the boxes overlap their own 98.8 m centroid spacing by 1.44x, so extract_grid_centerlines.py chains it by RADIUS (each cell to its 2 nearest within 1.6 pitches) instead of by grid adjacency; the lattice test kept only 26% of the route and that quarter was not a principled subset. Retention 79.6% of link length, 1 mesh component dropped. VOLTAGE IS DECODED, NOT GUESSED: NOMINAL_VO is volts-with-a-unit ('23900 Volts') mixing line-to-neutral with line-to-line, and a cross-tab of all 150,575 cells against Type/PHASE_DESI shows 7970/7200/19920/2400/14400/4800 V occur on 1-phase laterals 97-100% of the time and are therefore line-to-neutral (x sqrt(3) -> 13.8/12.47/34.5/4.16/24.9/8.32 kV), while 13800/12470/34500/23900/4160/24900/8320 sit on the three-phase and Mainline rows and are line-to-line as published. Post-decode the layer spans 4.16-34.5 kV — pure distribution. COVERS THE TWIN CITIES METRO LAKES, which no other Minnesota source does: Xcel's planning regions here are Minneapolis, St Paul, White Bear Lake, Minnetonka, Edina, Maple Grove and Newport (Minnetonka and White Bear are seaplane water) plus Southeast and Northwest MN and slices of ND/SD. Minnesota withdrew its state conductor layer in 2022, which is why this matters. Los Angeles Department of Water and Power overhead primary distribution — 153,197 of 211,078 polylines (OH_UG='OVERHEAD CONDUCTOR'; the 57,881 'UNDERGROUND CABLE' are excluded server-side and never downloaded). REAL span-level conductor geometry, not a cell aggregation: 2-vertex segments of ~40 m with GISID 'OHP…' = overhead primary. OVERHEAD IS PROVEN PER FEATURE by the layer's own OH_UG flag. Voltage_Class is a string enum with only two values, '4.8-KV' and '34.5-KV', decoded at fetch because volt_kv() nulls a number with a unit attached (the ok-oge '138 KV' correction) — pure distribution, no transmission voltage anywhere in it, so LADWP's 138/230/500 kV transmission and the Owens Valley aqueduct lines stay HIFLD's job. klass minor_line and candidate-excluded: 57,881 underground segments in the same network means an overhead run ending at a bank is very often the circuit diving underground (the co-psco / or-pge-d reasoning). Extent -118.67..-118.15, 33.68..34.33 = the LA basin and the San Fernando Valley. Orange & Rockland Utilities (Con Edison) nodal hosting-capacity segments — 157,285 OVERHEAD of 218,805 published, CONSTRUCTIONTYPE='OH' filtered server-side. Layers 0 (3-phase, 88,930 published / 79,060 OH) and 1 (1PH and 2PH, 129,875 / 78,225 OH) are MERGED INTO ONE SOURCE ID on purpose: they are two layers of one utility's own network, and counting them separately would let O&R corroborate itself into tier A — the rule ny-coned and ca-sce/ca-sce-s already follow. Same platform and same nodal schema as its CECONY sibling and BETTER than it: CECONY exposes no OH/UG attribute anywhere (hence ny-coned's mixed posture), while O&R ships CONSTRUCTIONTYPE per segment, so this one is overhead-PROVEN. Voltage comes from LOCAL_VOLTAGE on L0 and VOLT on L1 — same quantity, different column, already in kV. klass minor_line and candidate-excluded for the standard distribution reason (61,520 underground segments in the same network). Territory -74.90..-73.89, 40.92..41.69: Rockland and Orange counties NY, the Hudson Highlands, Greenwood Lake, Lake DeForest, and the northern-NJ lake country (Hopatcong, Wanaque, Monksville).
